Mimmo Dei

Guglielmo "Mimmo" Dei (* 1909 in Rome ; † April 20, 1985 ) was an Italian sports patron and racing team owner.

Life

Dei was the owner of the Maserati dealer network in central and southern Italy. In the early 1950s, he initiated some special versions of Maserati's A6G street sports car . In 1956 Dei founded the Italian motorsport team Scuderia Centro Sud . The name referred to the sphere of activity of its Maserati agencies. Dei also used his racing cars in Formula 1 , where he was able to fall back on discarded Maserati 250F works cars in the 1950s .

He made Lorenzo Bandini 's entry into international motorsport possible and celebrated his greatest success in a world championship run with the young Masten Gregory when the American came third at the Monaco Grand Prix .

As a rule, Dei's formula racing cars were driven by drivers who had already had their heyday in motorsport and to whom he gave the opportunity to race again. Luigi Villoresi and Louis Chiron drove their last big races for Scuderia Centro Sud. The second cockpit was already rented to wealthy private drivers at the end of the 1950s. Dei partially financed his racing team and drivers like Giorgio Bassi and Alfonso Thiele came to their only appearances in Formula 1 world championship races.

In 1963 he bought a BRM P57 , the world champion car of 1962, and moved the racing team near the BRM factory. The P57 was used by the Scuderia until 1965, when Dei dissolved his racing team and retired into private life.
