Carlo-Maria Abate (born July 10, 1932 in Turin - † April 29, 2019 ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

Abate was considered one of the best GT drivers of his era, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Especially in the Ferrari 250 GTO he was able to prove his driving skills again and again. There are different spellings for his middle name. He is also referred to as Carlo Mario Abate in several publications. Allegedly he preferred this spelling himself.

Abate was a works driver at Ferrari and Porsche , but drove most of his sports car races for the Scuderia Serenissima des Conte Giovanni Volpi . In 1961 he won the 500 km race on the Nürburgring for this racing team in a Fiat Abarth 1000 . Abate also tried his hand at Formula 1 , but he never took part in a world championship run. In 1962 he finished fourth in the Gran Premio di Napoli, which was not part of the world championship, in a Porsche. Further successes were third places at the Gran Premio del Mediterraneo in 1962 and at the Gran Premio di Siracusa in 1963. In the same year he achieved a fifth place at the Gran Premio Città di Imola on a Cooper from Scuderia Centro Sud .

He celebrated his greatest successes in the sports car. He competed three times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , but there were no countable placements. In 1961 , a gearbox failure stopped the fast Abate / Trintignant duo in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB at halftime of the race. In 1962 Abate met the same fate , this time with Colin Davis as co-driver. A year later, an accident also ended Abate's race prematurely.

In the races for the World Sports Car Championship , however, Abate was able to celebrate some successes for Ferrari in the GT class. His greatest triumph was winning the 1963 Targa Florio with Joakim Bonnier as a team-mate for Porsche.

When the attempt to get a usable racing car for the 1963 Italian Grand Prix failed, Abate retired from racing at the end of the season.
