Le Mans 24 hour race 1962
The 30 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 30 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held at from 23 to 24 June 1962 the Circuit des 24 Heures .
New racing classes
Months before the race, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest caused some confusion and astonishment among the regular Le Mans starters with a new classification. Winners should be chosen in no less than 18 classes - including the Index of Performance and the Index of Efficiency. The fact that this did not work in all was because some did not even have starters. The attempt to bring more prototypes to Le Mans with the experimental classes also failed. What made the Ferrari 250 GTO from Pierre Noblet and Jean Guichet, which was registered in the GT class , different from the NART -250 GTO that started in the experimental class was not entirely clear to the specialist audience either.
Before the race, there was a scandal because the ACO officials refused to approve the Lotus 23 during the technical inspection. The little Lotus had made its debut in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring and was in the lead with Jim Clark at the wheel at the beginning of the race. Colin Chapman brought two 23s to Le Mans. One of the works cars had a 1-liter Ford engine. The second car, which was reported by the UDT Laystall Racing Team , but was also a works car, had a 0.7 liter Climax engine. The cars were considered favorites in their classes, and hours after acceptance it leaked that the ACO had given in to pressure from the French teams and confirmed that the car was not safe. Chapman left and carried out his announcement that he would never return to Le Mans in a works car.
The race
The 1962 24-hour race was the last Le Mans race that a front-engined racing car could win. With the sixth overall victory, Ferrari became the sole record holder for the brands. After his fourth win as a driver, Olivier Gendebien announced his retirement from Le Mans after the race. That the attempt with the experimental vehicles had failed could also be seen from the overall ranking. The first 13 vehicles included eleven GT cars.
From the first lap, Graham Hill came back in the lead in the new Aston Martin DP212 . The Aston Martin was a serious opponent of the Ferraris until the early hours of the night, when the car broke down after a broken oil pipe. During the night, the duel from the previous year was repeated. Again the two Rodríguez brothers fought a violent exchange of blows with Gendebien and Phil Hill . But the NART Ferrari failed after 14 hours with clutch damage.
By then, Mike Parkes had long since left. The Briton had buried his Ferrari in the dreaded sandbank of the Mulsanne and when attempting to free the car again - after shoveling the car for more than half an hour - the engine revved. The Maserati were fast, but not stable enough. Dick Thompson was even in the lead with the Tipo 151 after two hours before he was eliminated due to an accident. Noblet and Guichet won the GT class, and Charles Deutsch won the duel in the small classes against his former partner René Bonnet with his racing cars .
