The Morgan Plus 4 is a roadster from the British car manufacturer Morgan that was built between 1950 and 1969, 1985 and 2000 and between 2005 and 2019. The vehicle, which is offered as a two or four-seater, is located between the Morgan 4/4 and the Morgan Plus 8 .

On March 3, 2020, the successor model Morgan Plus Four was presented, which consists of 97 percent new parts. In addition, the number in the model name has been replaced by a number .

With the Plus 4, which was launched in 1950, Morgan stuck to the design features of the 1930s. The car had a ladder frame , the front suspension designed in 1909 and patented for Morgan with vertical guide tubes and coil springs, a rigid rear axle on leaf springs and the body made of ash wood and sheet steel. From 1953, the front section with the later typical round radiator grille was new in contrast to the first flat version, the so-called "flat wheel".

The car had a water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine with a side camshaft and a Solex downdraft carburetor, displacement 2088 cm³, output 69 hp (51 kW) at 4200 rpm, maximum torque 15.4 mkp (151 Nm). Gears two to four of the four-speed transmission were synchronized. The power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a split cardan shaft . Initially the engines came from the standard Vanguard , later it was Triumph-TR engines .

In 1954, a Morgan Plus 4 TR with 1991 cc engine from Triumph was also offered, which made 91 hp (67 kW) at 4800 rpm and had a maximum torque of 16.1 mkp (158 Nm). With the engine from the Triumph TR3 , the power increased in 1959 to 101 PS (74 kW) at 5000 / min and the maximum torque to 16.8 mkp (165 Nm) at 3000 / min and for racing there was a Plus 4 Super Sports in 1963 with 120 PS (88 kW) at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 19.8 mkp (194 Nm). According to the factory, the Super Sports was up to 210 km / h, depending on the axle ratio.

The dimensions and weight of the Morgan Plus 4 changed only slightly during the first epoch from 1950 to 1969. The roadster was initially 3550 mm, later 3650 m long and 1420 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2438 mm and a track width of 1190 mm at the front and 1230 mm at the rear. At the beginning of the construction period, the weight was given as 710 kg “dry” and from the 1960s onwards as 900 kg for the fully fueled vehicle. The values ​​for the four-seater as well as for the convertible and coupé differed slightly.

At the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1962 , a Morgen Plus 4 won the Grand Tourisme class with a capacity of up to 2 liters. Compared to the production model, the car had a lower bonnet and hardtop made of aluminum, as well as a longer rear axle ratio and a 90-liter tank. The weight was 790 kg. In the overall standings, the vehicle driven by Chris Lawrence and Richard Shepard-Barron took 13th place with an average speed of 151.220 km / h. In the 1000 km race in 1962 at the Nürburgring , Gay and Claude Savoye achieved 28th place overall in Morgan Plus 4 and came third in the GT class up to 2 liters. Two other Morgan Plus 4s dropped out in the first half of the race. In 1963, Chris Lawrence ran three cars with 2.5-liter engines, driven by Rob Slotemaker / Hugh Braithwaite and Philip Arnold / Robin Carnegie, who took first and second place in their class, as well as Adrian Dence / Billy Bleidenstein. In 1964 Lawrence was again at the Nürburgring, but without success.
