Herbert Demetz

Herbert Roberto Demetz (* 1936 in Kastelruth ; † December 22, 1965 ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

The South Tyrolean Herbert Demetz began his racing career in 1960 in a Lancia Appia . He celebrated his first race victory at the Coppa d'Oro di Modena in 1960, when he won the class for GT cars up to 1.5-liter displacement there.

In 1961 Demetz became a works driver at Abarth and competed in a large number of GT races in Italy for the Italian racing team. In 1962 he finished second in the Berlin Grand Prix , which is part of the sports car world championship, and retired from the Le Mans 24-hour race as a partner of Mauro Bianchi in the early stages of the race due to ignition damage. Demetz had his best season in 1965, when he rose to become one of the best European hillclimb drivers and won, among other things, the hill climb in Bolzano , which was a championship race of the sports car world championship that year.

Herbert Demetz had a fatal accident in December 1965.
