Freiburg-Schauinsland hill climb 1964
The Freiburg-Schauinsland mountain race , also known as the Freiburg-Schauinsland Mountain Prize , was a mountain race that was held on August 9, 1964. At the same time, the race was the 11th round of the sports car world championship and the sixth race of the European hill climb championship in 1964 . According to auto motor und sport, around 60,000 spectators came to the Schauinsland.
The race
The hill climb on the Schauinslandstraße from Horben to the Schauinsland -Passhöhe was part of the 1964 World Sports Car Championship. The hill climb on the Passo della Consuma in May was won by Odoardo Govoni on a Maserati Tipo 60 . In June they drove on the Rossfeld . There won Edgar Barth on a Elva with Porsche -Motor.
Barth also won the Schauinsland; this time on a works Porsche 718 RS Spyder . The attraction were the Shelby Cobra Roadsters reported by Carroll Shelby , which were driven by Bob Bondurant , Jochen Neerpasch and Joseph Siffert . The best of the trio was Bondurant.
The fact that the three AC Cobra and a Ferrari 250 GTO started with Ludovico Scarfiotti was due to the regulations of the GT Brand World Championship, according to which the applicants for the title had to take part in at least one hill climb in order to be classified. The chances of the relatively clumsy AC Cobras of a good placement were generally assessed as low and it was all the more astonishing when Bob Bondurant drove the second best time on a wet track with 7: 06.86 minutes or 94.45 km / h. In the two races he was 13.170 seconds behind the winner Edgar Barth and fourth in front of Scarfiotti. Second place for 21-year-old Franco Patria in an Abarth 2000 GT with a rear-engined engine ahead of Herbert Müller with the more agile mid-engined Porsche 904/8 was also considered remarkable . However, Patria benefited from the fact that he was the only one of the fast drivers to be able to complete his second run in dry conditions. The fastest in the wet was André Knörr in a Porsche 904, who drove the 11.2 kilometers in 7: 03.09 minutes or at a speed of 95.3 km / h.
