The A285 is a Class I road established in 1923 between the A27 at West Hampnett (east of Chichester) and Petworth. A production facility for Rolls-Royce vehicles has been located at the then junction from the A27 since 2003 (Goodwood plans). There it runs first on Stane Street , an old Roman road that led to London. With the opening of the Westhampnett bypass (A27), the A285 was connected to it. In addition, the connection of the city ring of Chichester to the bypass road was numbered with A285.
