1964 Daytona 2000km race
The 1964 Daytona 2000km race , also The Daytona Continental Third Annual (2000km Grand Touring Road Race Championat des Marques), Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach , took place on February 16 at Daytona International Speedway and was the first Race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The 1963 World Sports Car Championship had ended with the 500 km race at Bridgehampton in the United States ; the first round of the championship in 1964 was held in the USA. The Daytona circuit had already hosted two world championships. In 1962 and 1963 , 3-hour races were held here, in which only GT vehicles were allowed to start. In 1964 the race distance was increased to 2000 km, which equated to a driving time of 12 hours. That corresponded to the driving time of the long-established Sebring 12-hour race . Showing the race distance in kilometers and not in miles was unusual for a race in North America, but complied with the requirements of the World Championship regulations.
The race ended with a dominant victory for Pedro Rodríguez and Phil Hill, who had four laps ahead of another GTO driven by David Piper and Lucien Bianchi on a Ferrari 250 GTO / 64 registered by the North American Racing Team .
