Walter "Walt" Hansgen (born October 28, 1919 in Westfield , † April 7, 1966 in Orléans ) was an American racing driver .
Career
Walt Hansgen was one of the best American sports car drivers of the 1950s. His reputation built on his success with Jaguar racing cars , most notably for the Briggs Cunningham racing team . In 1958 he came to Great Britain and became a works driver for Lister .
In the early 1960s, he also tried the monoposto . He competed twice at the US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen . In 1961 he drove a Cooper T53 and retired early after an accident. In 1964 he competed in a factory Lotus 33 , finished fifth and secured two points for the drivers' world championship. In the same year he was thirteenth in the 500-mile race in Indianapolis .
He celebrated the really big successes in the sports car. He drove a Ferrari 250LM and a Lola T70 in the World Sports Car Championship . In 1966, he and Mark Donohue finished third in a Ford GT40 in the Daytona 24 Hours and second in the Sebring 12 Hours .
During the test weekend for the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1966 , Hansgen had a fatal accident. His car hit the sandbags lying on the edge of the racetrack. As a result, the car overturned and Hansgen suffered severe head injuries, which he succumbed to after a few days.
