World champion John Surtees in a Ferrari

The 1964 Automobile World Championship was the 15th season of the Automobile World Championship, now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over ten races from May 10, 1964 to October 25, 1964, the Drivers' World Championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held in this context .

The FIA -Ehrentitel Grand Prix of Europe was at the 1964 Grand Prix of Great Britain awarded.

John Surtees won the drivers championship for the first and only time. Ferrari became constructors' world champions for the second time. Since Surtees was also able to win seven motorcycle world championship titles from 1956 to 1960, he was and is the only motor sportsman to date to be both motorcycle and Formula 1 world champion.

After it looked at the beginning of the season as if Jim Clark's title defense was just a matter of form, the frequent technical defects made life difficult for this and the technically superior Lotus . The season was one of the most balanced racing seasons of all time, with five drivers and four teams sharing the victories.

Before the last race in Mexico City , Graham Hill was five points ahead of Surtees. Halfway through the race, Surtees' teammate Lorenzo Bandini drove into the rear of Hills BRM and damaged its exhaust pipes. Due to the following pit stop, Hill fell far behind and had practically no more chances of the world championship. Hill did not get into the points in this final GP of the season after this incident caused by Bandini. Then Jim led Clark and looked like the winner and the re-world champion. But with two laps to go, he retired due to oil loss. So now Dan Gurney was leading Bandini and Surtees. Third place was not enough for the former motorcycle world champion to win the title. In the last lap there was a Ferrari stall order and Bandini let his team-mate Surtees finish second behind Dan Gurney. Surtees won the world championship by one point ahead of Graham Hill (1962 and 1968 world championships), who was runner-up in 1964 like a year before and a year later.

Surtees won the Formula 1 World Championship due to the cancellation rules that were still in force at the time. Hill had scored seven points in the ten races of the season and would have come to 41 points, but since 1964 only counted the six best out of ten results, he was ultimately one point behind Surtees, who had no discarded result.

During training, the Dutchman Carel Godin de Beaufort had a serious accident in a private old Porsche 718 in the mine section and died one day later of his injuries.

John Surtees drove the best qualifying time with the V 8 Ferrari with 8: 38.4 minutes (the new lap record), ahead of Jim Clark (8: 38.8 minutes) and Dan Gurney (8: 39.3 minutes). At the request of the organizer, Colin Chapman provided the German Gerhard Mitter with a car. Unfortunately, he had far too little opportunity to train and had to use the additional training to get on the five compulsory laps. Bruce McLaren was the best man on the Cooper team in qualifying in 7th place (8: 47.1 minutes).

Victory was not easy for John Surtees with his Ferrari at the Nürburgring. He had to ask everything from his car as long as he knew Dan Gurney (Brabham) behind him, and that was the case until the 11th of 15 laps. Dan Gurney gave John Surtees a splendid fight and was even at the top at times. A defective cylinder head gasket caused the engine to overheat.

John Surtees also managed the best race lap with 8: 39.0 minutes (158.2 km / h) - the new lap record for races.

Maurice Trintignant, at 46 years of age the oldest Grand Prix driver who drove a 62/63 BRM, had battery problems on the last lap and did not reach the finish line, but finished in 5th place.
