background
At the German Grand Prix, Honda made its debut in the automobile world championship . After the team had already used the prototype Honda RA270 in test drives in 1963 , the Honda RA271 was developed based on this car . The vehicle had a monocoque , making Honda the third designer, alongside Lotus and BRM , to use this design. The Honda RA271 was painted in the colors of the national flag of Japan , with a white background and a large red dot on the front of the vehicle. A unique selling point was the car's Honda V12 engine. In 1964, the competition mainly used V8 engines, with the exception of Ferrari, who experimented with V6 engines in 1964 and, in the following races, with V12 engines. In the team's first season, only one vehicle was reported for Ronnie Bucknum . For him it was his debut in the automobile world championship.
In addition to the Honda RA271, there was another new car that was racing for the first time. Both Jim Clark and Mike Spence drove the Lotus 33 , a further development of its predecessor, the Lotus 25 . The biggest difference between the two vehicles was a newly developed wheel suspension for the new wider tires. The team's Lotus 25 acted as the third car for Gerhard Mitter , who contested his only race of the season. At Brabham , Dan Gurney drove the Brabham BT7 , while Jack Brabham drove the Brabham BT11 . Ferrari used the Ferrari 158 for John Surtees , Lorenzo Bandini drove the Ferrari 156 Aero .
For the first time since the 1961 British Grand Prix , the Rob Walker Racing Team competed with two drivers. Edgar Barth drove next to Jo Bonnier . For him it was the last race in the automobile world championship. Carel Godin de Beaufort in a Porsche had a fatal accident during training. With this accident, the use of private Porsche vehicles in the automobile world championship ended after the works team had withdrawn years earlier. In 2010 Porsche made efforts to return, but these plans were discarded. Also Scirocco-Powell pulled back, one last time reported André Pilette a vehicle of the designer for a race. British Racing Partnership paused and did not start.
With Bonnier, Graham Hill and Surtees, three former winners took part in the race. Ferrari had previously been successful six times with the designers, BRM and Lotus once each. In the drivers' standings, Clark was four points ahead of Graham Hill and 19 points ahead of Richie Ginther . In the constructors' championship, Lotus was ahead of BRM and Brabham.
training
The starting grid was determined in five training sessions, two of which took place on Friday and another three on Saturday. During the first practice session, some drivers had difficulties, Amon had a gearbox problem, the Bucknums Honda had a defective radiator and Brabham had an engine failure. Peter Revson lost control of his car and went off the track. He damaged his car on a tree but was uninjured. The first best time was set by Graham Hill, which he improved again some time later. Surtees set the second best time ahead of Gurney, while Clark was still tuning the new car and didn't get a time under nine minutes.
During the break between the second training session, Gurney's second Brabham also had the engine changed and Amon's car repaired. Graham Hill used the rest of the day for setup coordination and did not improve his time, so that Bandini and Surtees overtook him in the standings. Clark and Brabham also came closer to the top group with their respective fastest laps. Mitter did not take part in the training because Lotus team boss Colin Chapman did not provide him with the replacement car in case Clark decided to drive the old car one more time.
On Saturday, many drivers took to the track to do a quick lap before the rain began to pour. Surtees took first place, Clark also improved. However, when a light drizzle set in, all lap times became slower. Bucknum and Ginther had to have their vehicles repaired due to engine damage. In the fourth and last planned training session, the track became increasingly drier, so that further time improvements were possible. Surtees was the first driver to set a fastest lap under 8:40 minutes, followed by Clark and Gurney. Both BRM drivers had further technical problems, and Bob Anderson also had problems with his car. At the end of the training, Mitter was allowed to complete a few laps in the Lotus 25. Also Carel Godin de Beaufort was to qualify shortly before the end of training on the track and tried. In the mine he lost control of his obsolete Porsche and hit a tree on the route. The vehicle straightened up and de Beaufort was thrown out of the car. He injured his spinal cord and died a few days later. De Beaufort was the season's first fatality.
Surtees achieved his first pole position of the season four tenths of a second ahead of Clark. Gurney was third ahead of Bandini, who was more than five seconds slower than his teammate Surtees. Graham Hill qualified in fifth place on the grid ahead of Brabham and the two Cooper drivers Bruce McLaren and Phil Hill . The first ten were completed by Amon and Jo Siffert , Amon was the best driver with a customer vehicle. Bucknum was the last to qualify for Honda in 22nd place. Pilette, on the other hand, was too slow and was the only driver to break the ten minutes for the fastest lap. So he did not qualify for the race. Mitter and Bucknum had not driven the minimum number of five laps, an extra training session was held for both drivers, in which only they were allowed to drive and the lap times achieved did not count. It was all about completing the five laps for qualification in order to have Honda and the well-known German driver Mitter in the race for reasons of prestige.
run
At the start, as in previous years, the cars were set up in the correct position from which they started the race, instead of the usual approach. Clark seemed to be getting away best, but then the rear tires spun, causing Surtees and Bandini to overtake him. During the first lap, Clark countered and took the lead, but did not keep it for long because Surtees overtook him again at the beginning of the second lap. Gurney moved up to third place and was immediately behind Clark. With a little distance behind, a chasing group consisting of Graham Hill, Brabham, Phil Hill, Bandini, McLaren, Ginther and Amon formed. Other drivers in the back field had technical problems early on in the race. Hailwood retired with an engine failure and lost oil over a long distance, which was spread on the road. At Bonnier, a battery failure was the cause of the failure on the first lap. Revson, Mitter and Anderson came to the pits for various repairs. Bucknum improved by several positions at the end of the field due to the failures, problems and four overtaking maneuvers.
Due to the leaked oil, the speeds decreased significantly in the next laps, as the drivers slowed down at the dangerous point. Both Cooper drivers retired within a short time with engine damage, and Baghetti and Barth also parked their cars. Anderson tried to continue the race but also gave up on lap four with a damaged suspension. Ginther also pitted for repairs. In the lead, Gurney overtook the leading Surtees; Clark and Graham Hill dueled for third place and fell back a few seconds. Brabham was fifth behind, ahead of Bandini and Amon. Surtees and Gurney continuously expanded their lead on the pursuers and overtook each other several times, but finally Surtees prevailed because Gurney's Brabham overheated slightly and he therefore dropped back. Surtees then drove the fastest race lap after the leaked oil had dried. This was also a new lap record. Graham Hill improved to third when Clark retired after an engine failure.
At the front, Surtees extended his lead to 16 seconds, and there were also greater gaps between the riders behind them. Third-placed Graham Hill was too far away for Brabham, so he slowed down to save his car. As a result, Bandini caught up with him and when he was in the slipstream, Brabham mistakenly assumed that Bandini's team-mate Surtees would lap him. Brabham then let Bandini overtake without a fight. Brabham realized his mistake and was able to regain the lost position two laps later. Gurney set a new lap record that was broken by Surtees a little later. But the overheating in the cooling circuit of Gurney's Brabham got worse, so he passed Graham Hill and drove into the pits, but his mechanics didn't solve the problem, so he came back in a lap later. Brabham and Amon also headed for repairs in the pit lane, but the race was over for both. Bucknum also retired on lap twelve because he spun off the track and damaged the car. Revson had an accident a lap earlier. All four drivers were still rated because they had covered the necessary race distance.
Surtees won the race one minute ahead of Graham Hill and achieved the first win of the season for Ferrari. For Surtees it was the second victory in a row and the last at the German Grand Prix. Ferrari won this race again in 1972 . Bandini completed the podium positions in third place, Siffert, Trintignant and Maggs reached the points. For Siffert and Maggs these were the first points of the season, for Trintignant the last of his career. Ginther finished seventh ahead of Spence, Mitter and Gurney.
In the drivers' championship, Graham Hill took first place two points ahead of Clark. Surtees improved several places to third and was 13 points behind Graham Hill. Lotus stayed first in the constructors' championship, one point ahead of BRM, Ferrari overtook Brabham and was new third.
