The 1989 German Grand Prix took place on July 30th at the Hockenheimring and was the ninth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The only change in the field of drivers compared to the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier was the signing of Michele Alboreto at Larrousse to replace Éric Bernard , for whom the 1989 Formula 1 season ended after only two races.

The Brabham , Rial and BMS teams no longer had to take part in the pre-qualification due to their relatively good training performance during the first half of the season. For Onyx , Osella and Zakspeed , however, there was no improvement in the situation. However, as nine drivers could still not be allocated guaranteed training spots due to the registration list, which was still clearly too extensive, Larrousse was downgraded. In addition, the AGS and Coloni teams had to compete in both cars for the preliminary round on Friday morning.

training

The two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost qualified for the front row in front of the two Ferrari team- mates Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger as well as the Williams of Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen . Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet made up the fourth row. Volker Weidler was disqualified because his vehicle was illegally pushed into the pit lane to start.

run

After the start, Berger took the lead briefly, but was pushed back from this position by the two McLaren drivers Senna and Prost on the first lap.

First, Senna was able to extend his lead over Prost, especially since the latter made a pit stop on lap 18 to have his tires changed. Two laps later, Senna also wanted to do this, but his stop lasted significantly longer than that of his teammate, which gave him the lead. There he was able to hold onto the third from last lap, but then fell behind Senna due to transmission problems.

Since Berger had an accident as a result of a puncture, Mansell was third ahead of Patrese and Piquet. Derek Warwick received the last championship point of the day in sixth place.
