The 1989 British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on July 16 and was the eighth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

In the middle of the season, it was decided which teams would receive guaranteed training places for the rest of the year and which had to compete for pre-qualification. Since AGS , Osella , Coloni , Zakspeed and EuroBrun did not show any positive tendencies, these racing teams were more or less established as teams that still had to overcome the pre-qualification hurdle. For Brabham , BMS , Onyx and Rial, on the other hand, the prospects of promotion were good before the race at Silverstone, while Larrousse and Minardi and, in the worst case, even Ligier and Lotus , had to fear that from now on with at least one of the two cars they would be among the pre-qualifiers.

Derek Warwick returned to the Arrows team, which meant that Martin Donnelly's Grand Prix engagement was initially limited to just one race. At AGS, Joachim Winkelhock was replaced by Yannick Dalmas, who was dismissed by Larrousse . Winkelhock's Formula 1 career thus ended after seven Grand Prix weekends without a single qualification and race participation, as he had always failed to pre-qualify.

training

The qualification was again dominated by the two McLaren drivers, with Ayrton Senna taking pole position in front of Alain Prost the previous weekend, in contrast to the French Grand Prix . The two Ferrari drivers Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger qualified for the second row ahead of Riccardo Patrese and Maurício Gugelmin .

run

Prost took a short lead after a better start than Senna. However, the Brazilian countered successfully in the first corner.

Maurício Gugelmin and Nicola Larini had to start the race from the pit lane. Larini in particular reached the Woodcote curve, well behind the rest of the field , where FISA President Jean-Marie Balestre crossed the route on foot at the same time , which was strictly forbidden. Larini was able to narrowly evade the French, who otherwise always insisted that all safety precautions were observed.

After a spin in the twelfth lap, Senna was eliminated and had to give Prost the lead over Mansell and Boutsen. As the Belgian fell behind due to a puncture, Nelson Piquet was able to take third place for a few laps before he was ousted from this position by Alessandro Nannini nine laps before the end of the race . Behind Nelson Piquet, the two Minardi drivers Pierluigi Martini and Luis Pérez-Sala took the unusual places five and six. With the three World Championship points achieved in this way, the team was able to prevail against Onyx in the fight for the guaranteed training places.
