Hugh Peter Martin Donnelly (born March 26, 1964 in Belfast ) is a former Northern Irish racing driver .

Formula 1 career

After a few years in the Formula 3 and Formula 3000 he gave 1989 season in the Arrows at the French Grand Prix his Formula 1 debut. After only one Grand Prix in the Arrows cockpit, he signed for the 1990 season with Lotus and contested his first full season there - with the exception of the last two races.

In qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix in 1990 in Jerez de la Frontera , Donnelly had a serious accident. His car took a quick right bend off the lane and hit the guardrail at high speed. As a result of the impact, the vehicle broke and Donnelly and his seat, to which he was strapped, was thrown onto the track. Despite serious injuries, he survived the accident, but had to end his Formula 1 career.

In his career he contested a total of 13 out of 15 Formula 1 races for which he had been nominated.

According to Formula 1

After retiring from Formula 1 and the lengthy rehabilitation, Donnelly competed in several invitation races (including rallycross ) and races with historic vehicles.

In 1992 he built a Vauxhall Junior Team. The team Martin Donnelly Racing was very successful, build in the single-seater junior formulas and helped the careers of a new generation of young drivers whose goal is F1. The team was disbanded in 2004 due to Donnelly filing for bankruptcy for non-payment of taxes and legal disputes over driver contracts. In the same year he took part in a 24-hour race at Silverstone , UK .

Quote

"It's one of the best times I've had on four wheels. Some of the Formula One boys should come here to find out again what the fun in motor sport is all about!
