The 1990 Spanish Grand Prix took place in Jerez de la Frontera on September 30th and was the 14th race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Bernd Schneider returned to Formula 1 one last time to replace the injured Alex Caffi . Otherwise, the same drivers who had contested the Portuguese Grand Prix the previous weekend also competed in the last European race of the season in Spain.

During the weekend, Alain Prost made several negative comments about Scuderia Ferrari , which led to displeasure in the team.

training

The pre-qualification on Friday morning was scheduled so early that it was still dark at the time of the planned implementation.

During qualifying in the afternoon, Martin Donnelly and his Lotus 102 hit the track so hard due to a suspension damage that the entire front of the car down to the roll bar literally splintered. Donnelly and his seat were lying motionless on the track. He was taken to hospital with severe leg injuries that marked the end of his Formula 1 career. That he survived the accident was described in some media as the "miracle of Jerez". The fact that Ayrton Senna reached pole position for the fiftieth time in his Formula 1 career was of minor importance in view of these events. His best lap time was more than four tenths of a second lower than that of second-placed Alain Prost. Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi formed the second row ahead of Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese .

run

While Senna took the lead ahead of Prost and Mansell, Berger tried to reach fourth place between Alesi and Patrese. Although he succeeded in doing this, it resulted in an Alesis lathe.

While Prost and Mansell were able to keep up with the leader Senna, Berger, who had started with a relatively hard tire compound, came under pressure from the rivals who followed him and who lined up behind him. Among them were both Williams and both Benetton pilots.

During the pit stops, Prost, with the support of Mansell, managed to overtake Senna. Nelson Piquet , who had not yet completed a pit stop, was in the lead at this point. Due to a driving error, however, he had to let Prost and Senna pass two laps later. After that, he was third for a few laps before retiring on lap 41. Around the same time, Senna slowed down so Mansell could catch up. The Brazilian had to give up two laps later. It was later discovered that the radiator in Senna's car had been damaged by a piece of wreckage, causing fluid to spill onto the rear tires.

Prost and Mansell achieved a double victory for Ferrari. Alessandro Nannini took third place ahead of Thierry Boutsen , Riccardo Patrese and Aguri Suzuki , whose team Larrousse, as usual, was not taken into account when awarding the points for the constructors' world championship due to the chassis that was not manufactured in-house.
