The Ferrari 641 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship.

Development history and technology

The Ferrari 641 was the further development of the Ferrari 640 , which John Barnard had developed. Enrique Scalabroni and Steve Nichols were responsible for working on the new racing car. The vehicle had clearer lines than the previous model and many details were improved. The semi-automatic transmission , which was the weak point of the 640 last year, has been revised. Since the two designers already knew at the beginning of their work on the 641 that Alain Prost would change from McLaren to Scuderia, Prost's soft driving style was taken into account when working on the chassis. The only weak point of the 641 was the V12 engine , which only achieved similar performance values as the V10 engine from Honda in its final expansion stage . The wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones , the springs and dampers on the inside were operated via push rods (“ pushrods ”).

Racing history

In 1990 the Scuderia narrowly missed the world championship title in both the drivers 'and the constructors' championships. Alain Prost won five world championship races with the 641, but lost the title to the Brazilian McLaren driver due to a collision at the start with Ayrton Senna in the penultimate race in Suzuka ( Japanese Grand Prix ). And although the second works driver Nigel Mansell won another Grand Prix with the 641, the constructors' trophy also went to McLaren.

Trivia

After the introduction of the Ferrari 642 , a discarded copy of the Type641 driven by Alain Prost was given to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) and exhibited there because of its attractive design .
