The Ferrari Dino 166P was a racing car developed by Scuderia Ferrari in 1965 .

Background and technology

In the history of Ferrari racing sports car models, the Dino 166P is considered the small P2 because the body shape was similar. As with the Dino 246SP , Ferrari Formula 1 technology was also used in this model . The engine had its origin in the Ferrari 156 , with which Phil Hill won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1961 . The V6 engine had a cylinder angle of 60 degrees, four overhead camshafts and double ignition. The power was specified with 185 hp. The 5-speed gearbox was locked directly to the differential. The chassis had independent wheel suspensions and four internally ventilated, rear internal disc brakes.

Racing history

The Dino 166P was only used in four racing events. During the first race, the 1000 km race in Monza in 1965 , chassis 0834 did not even come a lap on the day of the race; The car had an engine failure shortly after the start. The Scuderia reported the two Italians Giancarlo Baghetti and Giampiero Biscaldi as drivers . In the second outing there was the first and only race win for the Dino 166P. Lorenzo Bandini won the Rome Grand Prix .

The Dino 166P was also registered in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1965 for the prototype class with a displacement of up to 2 liters. Bandini's teammate was Nino Vaccarella . After around seven hours of driving, the two Italians finished fourth in the overall standings. The gap to teammates John Surtees and Ludovico Scarfiotti , who drove a Ferrari 330P2 , was one lap.

In the fourth and final race, the Le Mans 24-hour race , the Dino model retired as early as it did in Monza. This time the car was driven by Baghetti and Mario Casoni . Baghetti had an engine failure on the second lap of the race and had to retire.

After the race in Le Mans , the chassis was modified and used as the Dino 206P , especially in hill climbs.
