The Ferrari 312T2 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the Formula 1 World Championship from 1976 to 1978.

Racing history

The Formula 1 regulations were changed by the FIA for the 1976 season . Since the first three races took place from January to March in Brazil, South Africa and California, where the teams usually shipped last year's cars, the changes did not take effect until the Spanish Grand Prix in early May. The 1975 world champion car, the Ferrari 312T , was adapted and used as the 312T2.

The racing cars lost their mighty air scoops over the cockpit and got larger cockpit openings. The suspension, transmission and the flat 12-cylinder engine have been completely redesigned. Ferrari experimented with a De Dion rear suspension during the test drives , but this was not used in the race.

The 312T2 was the top car of the 1976 season and Niki Lauda had a reassuring lead in the drivers' championship before suffering his life-threatening accident at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring . The cause of the accident could never be completely clarified. The Argentinian Carlos Reutemann joined the team as a substitute for Lauda , as Ferrari was not convinced of the Austrian's recovery. But just 42 days after his accident, Lauda started at the Italian Grand Prix and finished fourth. Lauda lost the drivers' championship because he gave up in the pouring rain at the last race in Japan . The Scuderia could not take the constructors cup.

In 1977 the Scuderia competed in the world championship with the almost unchanged 312T2 and the Lauda / Reutemann driver pairing. With the 312T2, Lauda became Formula 1 world champion for the second time in his career.

The 312T2 was also used in January 1978 in the first two Grand Prix races of the 1978 season in South America. Reutemann won the Brazilian Grand Prix , the last race of the 312T2, which was then replaced by the Ferrari 312T3 .
