Reports
background
With 17 points behind the World Championship leader Niki Lauda , James Hunt went into the three overseas races that made up the end of the season. The McLaren team also had a chance of winning the constructors' championship. Because of this situation, it was decided to suspend the further development of the problematic M26 for the time being and to end the season with the mature M23 .
The use of Carlos Reutemann at Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix was first no sequel. The team's commitment was again reduced to the two usual works cars for Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni . Larry Perkins was signed for the remainder of the season to fill the cockpit that had become vacant at Brabham after Reutemann's resignation and which was temporarily occupied by Rolf Stommelen in Italy . His previous team, HB Bewaking Systems , decided not to take part in the overseas races.
Chris Amon , who actually decided to retire from motorsport during the German Grand Prix , returned to the field at the wheel of the second Wolf-Williams .
training
In addition to James Hunt, who achieved pole position, the March drivers Ronnie Peterson and Vittorio Brambilla in particular showed good training performances with the second and third fastest lap times. This was followed by Patrick Depailler , Mario Andretti and Niki Lauda.
After Chris Amon spun, Harald Ertl was unable to evade in time and collided with his car. Both drivers injured themselves slightly, so that they could not take part in the race, also due to the damage to their vehicles.
Otto Stuppacher made another attempt to qualify for a Grand Prix in a private Tyrrell 007 , but he was far from successful. In the meantime, some driver colleagues appealed to him to stop the attempt, as they saw in him a danger due to his inexperience.
run
Peterson got off to a better start than Hunt, which allowed him to take the lead. In the second corner, Depailler overtook Brambilla, who had started a little worse, and thus came in third. During the further course of the first lap, Brambilla was overtaken by Mario Andretti, on the fourth lap by Jody Scheckter and on the ninth lap by Niki Lauda.
Hunt took the lead on lap ninth and never gave it up for the rest of the race. The previous leader, Peterson, lost numerous positions during the following laps and ended up finishing ninth.
Due to handling problems, Lauda had to let Jochen Mass , Clay Regazzoni and Carlos Pace pass on the 59th lap and thus fell back to eighth place.
With his victory, James Hunt reduced his deficit in the World Championship standings to eight points, as his opponent Niki Lauda remained without points.
