Robert Brett Lunger (born November 14, 1945 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is a former American automobile racing driver .
Career
Brett Lunger attended a car race in 1965 that sparked his interest in motorsport. In 1966 he drove as a paying driver in the CanAm series . Between 1972 and 1976 he took part in Formula 2 races and achieved fourth place as the best result ( Mantorp Park , Sweden). In 1971 he reached third place overall in the American Formula 5000 .
During his Formula 1 time, there were no notable successes. He became known as the driver who, together with Guy Edwards , Arturo Merzario and Harald Ertl, saved Niki Lauda from his burning car in 1976 after his accident at the German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife . Lunger had collided with the Ferrari; both cars were standing close together, the Ferrari burning. As the action progressed, Lunger climbed onto the Ferrari and pulled Lauda up while Merzario undid the seat belt after marshals contained the fire. As early as 1974, Lunger helped rescue his driver colleague Mickey Rupp on a similar occasion at the Ontario Motor Speedway .
In 1979 Lunger couldn't find a driver's seat and ended his racing career to continue his studies. As a journalist he worked at the South African Grand Prix for the broadcaster CBS.
