The 1977 Austrian Grand Prix took place on August 14th at the Österreichring near Zeltweg and was the twelfth race of the 1977 automobile world championship .
Reports
background
In order to increase safety on the overall very fast Österreichring, the first corner was defused by a braking chicane. This happened indirectly as a result of the accident of Mark Donohue , who had a fatal accident at this point during training for the 1975 Grand Prix . The measures that had been taken there immediately after the accident and that were valid for the 1976 race have meanwhile been perceived as inadequate.
As in Germany two weeks earlier , 30 participants were registered for the race weekend. The only changes were driver changes in the Shadow and ATS teams , where Riccardo Patrese was replaced by his compatriot Arturo Merzario and Hans Heyer by the Austrian Hans Binder . Harald Ertl , who was not present at the two previous races, had meanwhile left the Hesketh team permanently and was replaced by Ian Ashley .
training
The opponents for last year's World Championship title , Niki Lauda and James Hunt , formed the front row ahead of Mario Andretti and Hans-Joachim Stuck , according to the training result . His team-mate John Watson , who had already qualified once for pole position and five times for second place on the grid this season, only finished training in twelfth place.
run
It was raining on the morning of the race day. Shortly before the start, however, it began to dry up, which led most drivers to start the race on slicks .
Lauda started the race as the leader ahead of Hunt and Andretti. The latter, however, managed to overtake the two opponents in front of him during the first lap. This was followed by Jody Scheckter in fourth place ahead of Patrick Tambay and Hans-Joachim Stuck. Gunnar Nilsson , who was one of the few drivers who had decided to start on rain tires, moved up from 16th on the grid to seventh on the first lap. During the following three rounds he even reached second place, which proved his decision to be correct. Meanwhile, Arturo Merzario, who also rode on rain tires, made up eight places during the first six laps and found himself in sixth place ahead of Niki Lauda, who had meanwhile fallen behind Scheckter and Stuck, showed a similar race to catch up.
From the tenth lap the track was so dry that Nilsson and Merzario had to go to their boxes to have their tires changed. Hunt came back to second place in front of Scheckter, Stuck and Alan Jones , who started from 14th place and had also gained a few places in the first laps.
Hunt took the lead on the twelfth lap when Andretti was eliminated due to an engine failure. Meanwhile, Jones continued his way to the top by overtaking Stuck and Scheckter to take second place.
On the 44th lap, James Hunt, the then leader, retired again due to an engine failure. Alan Jones, from now on at the top, then secured his first Grand Prix victory. It was also the first and only victory of the Shadow team. Niki Lauda finished second ahead of Hans-Joachim Stuck, who thus achieved his second podium in a row, which also turned out to be his last in Formula 1.
It was the first Grand Prix win by an Australian since Jack Brabham's success at the 1970 South African Grand Prix .
