occupation

The Divide - The hell are the others (original title: The Divide , alternative title: The Divide - The hell, that's the others! ) Is an end time film by the French director Xavier Gens . The film shows the moral and spiritual decline of a group of people in a post-atomic isolation situation.

action

The first scene of the film shows an atomic explosion over New York , from which a largely random group of nine people can save themselves. These people find shelter in the basement complex of a high-rise building that is maintained by caretaker Mickey, a former firefighter.

When the group wants to decide how to proceed, unidentifiable soldiers break into the basement and kidnap the only child present. The group managed to overpower some soldiers and captured an intact protective suit and a rifle. A group member is selected to use the protective suit and the rifle, disguised as a soldier, to explore the girl's whereabouts and, if possible, to free her. He discovers a kind of medical laboratory where the girl, unconscious, shaved bald and with her eyes taped shut, is connected to life support tubes and devices in a chamber so that she cannot be freed. The disguised intruder is finally noticed by the supervisory staff, is followed by alarmed soldiers and flees from them back to the basement.

Shortly afterwards the door of the cellar is welded shut from the outside. In the face of imprisonment and dwindling supplies, solidarity and morale decline, and despair and ruthlessness rise. Parts of the group are becoming more and more violent. The situation finally escalates when the hidden food storage warehouse is discovered by Mickey, whose access data is extracted from him through torture. The two young friends, Josh and Bobby, take control of the storeroom and thus the cellar, while Marilyn, desperate about the loss of her daughter, surrenders to the two of them and is abused more and more intensely and finally also sadistically and violently until she is abused eventually kills.

At the end of the film, Mickey reveals to the young woman Eva, who until then was the only participant who had always kept her self-respect and self-control, the hiding place of a weapon, and also a secret way out. Eva tries to seduce Josh to distract him so Sam can get the hidden gun from the pantry. However, there is a scuffle with Bobby, in the course of which Josh's brother Adrien is killed. When Sam's life is in danger, Eva kills the tyrannical and despotic Bobby attacking Sam and frees Mickey. Mickey asks Josh, who is now alone after Bobby's death, whether he is actually proud of himself, whereupon Josh lights himself with a kerosene lamp and starts a fire with it. While Mickey and Sam try to put out the fire, Eva decides to take the only protective suit and escape via the sewer into the destroyed and apparently uninhabited ruins of the city. The film ends with a look at the destroyed Manhattan .

Reviews

“Until the painful finale, however, you should definitely watch“ Divide ”without reservation. "The Divide" is hard, but excellently photographed and played genre food and a very clear recommendation. "

- Blairwitch.de

“Human values soon succumb to an overwhelming dynamic of power and order is only generated from the division into rulers and ruled. "The Divide" knows no absolution: Those who do not vaporize in the atomic explosion go through hell on earth. "

“For what the film is, you could leave out the whole first part. You get to know the characters a little better, but ultimately the whole part is just confusing. "
