Karl Mueller

Karl Mueller (born July 27, 1963 in Minneapolis ; † June 17, 2005 there ) was an American rock musician . In 1983 Mueller was a founding member and bass guitarist of the grunge band Soul Asylum , with whom he celebrated international success in the early 1990s. Mueller had previously founded the punk band Loud Fast Rules in 1981 together with Soul Asylum members Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner.

In May 2004 Mueller was diagnosed with larynx cancer. As a result, numerous benefit concerts were held in order to guarantee Mueller's medical treatment. At the Rock For Karl concert in Minneapolis on October 23, 2004, the band Hüsker Dü reunited , which together with Soul Asylum and the Replacements , whose planned reunion did not take place on the occasion, attracted attention in the mid-1980s alternative music from Minneapolis had provided. In addition, the Mound City Music Fest , organized by Jay Farrar , was held on December 11, 2004 to raise funds for Mueller and the hepatitis C patientAlejandro Escovedo . On this occasion there was a reunion of the Americana band Son Volt .

Before the disease became known, Soul Asylum began work on a new album, on which Mueller also worked while the cancer therapy was ongoing. He died of his illness on June 17, 2005 at the age of 41. The Silver Lining was released posthumously in 2006.
