Liuva II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liuva II (* 583/584; † June / July 603 ) was King of the Visigoths from December 601 to June / July 603 .

Liuva was the son and successor of King Rekkared I. Whether he was made co-regent or successor by his father and whether an election took place is unknown. The account of the historian Isidore of Seville , who praises Liuva, shows that Liuva was eighteen years old when he ascended the throne. He was an illegitimate child and his mother was of low origin. His brief reign of a year and a half was uneventful. Liuva became the victim of a conspiracy by Witterich , who succeeded him. Soon after the overthrow, Witterich had his predecessor's right hand cut off in order to make him incapable of rule; It is unclear whether Liuva died of the injury or was later murdered on Witterich's orders. The dynasty founded by King Leovigild ended with Liuva's death .
