Son Volt is an independent band founded in 1994 by Jay Farrar in New Orleans , Louisiana after the band Uncle Tupelo split up . It is assigned to the Alternative Country genre . Her album Trace was voted one of the best albums of 1995 by English-language Rolling Stone .
style
The style ranges from quiet folk and country ballads , which are reminiscent of Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding , to pub rock in the sense of Neil Young with Crazy Horse . They are often compared to the early Wilco , Jayhawks , and REM in the Automatic-for-the-People phase.
Break
Even if, according to Jay Farrar, Son Volt was able to fight for more artistic freedom with each album, the favor of the fans was inversely proportional. After their third album, the major label Warner Music Group canceled the contract due to lack of sales. Since 2001 Farrar has released various solo recordings, but stressed that Son Volt was not dissolved. In 2005 he reformed the band, but none of the former members except himself is still there. The album Okemah and the Melody of Riot was released on the independent label Transmit Sounds .
