Jay Farrar (born December 26, 1966 in Belleville , Illinois ) is an American songwriter from St. Louis , Missouri . He became known with his band Uncle Tupelo , which is considered the most important pioneering band in alternative country of the 1990s. After the band split up, he founded Son Volt and has been releasing solo albums since 2001.

Solo albums

Sebastopol (2001) and Terroir Blues (2003) published in the Independent - record label Artemis . At Sebastopol he worked closely with Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips . An EP with songs from the Sebastopol sessions, ThirdShiftGrottoSlack , was particularly popular with fans , and was released in 2002. The original soundtrack for the independent film The Slaughter Rule (2002, directed by Alex and Andrew Smith) was released in 2003 on Bloodshot Records . In the same year Farrar founded his own label Transmit Sound (in the beginning: "Act / Resist Records").

Farrar is often accompanied on his recordings and live performances by the rock group Canyon and Eric Heywood and Mark Spencer of the Blood Oranges .

style

His style ranges from simple mock folk -music, traditional Country -elements to Rock Band arrangements, to Neil Young or Dinosaur Jr. remember. He also experiments with different sounds and samples on his solo records. At times this is reminiscent of psychedelia , with reference to oriental sounds. One of his trademarks is the alternative tuning of his guitar.
