Benjamin "Ben" Gibbard (born August 11, 1976 in Bremerton , Washington ) is an American singer and guitarist. He became known as the lead singer of the indie rock - band Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service .

Life

Gibbard was born in Bremerton, Washington. His father was in the United States Navy and the family roamed the country before returning to Washington State. Gibbard spent his formative years there during the grunge grunge era. He graduated from Olympic High School in 1994. He later moved to Bellingham and graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in environmental chemistry . He was raised Roman Catholic and referred to himself as "that indoctrinated Catholic even though I haven't been to church voluntarily in 10 or 15 years."

He played in the pop group Pinwheel and at a concert he met Chris Walla, who would later become the guitarist of Death Cab for Cutie. At the beginning of 1999 he started his solo project as ¡All-Time Quarterback! .

Ben Gibbard supports the organizations Planned Parenthood and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as well as the Bridge School founded by Neil Young .

He reportedly stopped drinking alcohol in 2008 and started running marathons. He ran his first trail ultramarathon in 2013 and has done several every year since.

Ben Gibbard got engaged to actress Zooey Deschanel on December 28, 2008 . They married in September 2009. In November 2011, their separation was announced. Gibbard later married photographer and tour manager Rachel Demy on October 21, 2016 in Seattle, Washington.

On October 16, 2012 he released his solo album Former Lives on the independent label Barsuk Records (US) and City Slang (EU).

In November 2014, Gibbard appeared as a guest on the eighth studio album Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters .

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gibbard streamed concerts from home every day after canceling shows due to the pandemic. Gibbard played songs from his bands Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service, as well as other artists such as The Decemberists , Radiohead , New Order, and Depeche Mode , while promoting local Washington state nonprofits.
