egoFM is a private music station in Bavaria that is licensed for nationwide distribution . The core target group are young people between 19 and 35 years of age.

history

The Media Council of the Bavarian Regulatory Authority for Commercial Broadcasting (BLM) decided at a meeting on 8 May 2008, five FM - supporting frequencies ( Munich , Nuremberg , Augsburg , Würzburg and Regensburg ) and a satellite frequency to the former station Radio melody belonged to the Project "radioblut" to be awarded. The decision was made on this concept from 25 applicants, as it was intended to bring young people closer to the radio and the economic basis of radio stations that were already there would not be jeopardized. Use was initially limited to four years and only subject to conditions . The frequency allocation could be revoked when the program format was changed and the BLM expected "[...] that deliveries to the churches and the Bavarian Youth Association will be made possible."

During the summer the working title was changed to Next Generation Radio . The plan was to start broadcasting at the end of October 2008 during the Munich Media Days. On November 21st, egoFM began its official program, previously it had already been broadcast via web stream. The first track played was What's My Age Again by blink-182 .

In autumn 2018 it became known through media reports that Studio Gong, one of the Ego-FM operators called “Radioblut GmbH”, put its shares up for sale and Antenne Bayern wanted to acquire them. But there was a lot of resistance in Bavaria against the plans of Antenne Bayern, so that an online initiative called “Volle Bandwidth” fought against the takeover and wanted to save the format of “Ego-FM”. The association of small Bavarian local radio providers also spoke out against a takeover of the provider by Antenne Bayern. After mediation by the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM), the publisher Konrad Schwingenstein, the grandson of August Schwingenstein , took over the shares that were for sale.

concept

The core of the concept is to bring young people closer to radio again. This is done through close links with the Internet , through active participation in the program of young people and with the help of a wide range of music. This consists of electronic pop and various black music styles such as R&B , hip-hop , rap , reggae , soul , alternative rock , Britpop , independent pop & rock , dance or club music.

According to the company's own statement, the aim is to distinguish it from the format radio and the shallow " doodle radio ". The focus here is on the seamless passage of the songs; alternative songs and concepts are rarely used on such stations. As a rule, this means that the same songs are always played on the “Dudelradio” ( heavy rotation ) and the music selection is very narrow-band.
