Reports
background
Most of the teams stayed in South America during the two weeks between the Argentine Grand Prix and the second round of the World Cup of the season, so that the field of participants in São Paulo remained almost unchanged.
The only change was the comeback of the BRM team with Larry Perkins as driver.
training
As in Argentina, James Hunt secured pole position, but this time shared the front row with Carlos Reutemann . This was followed by Mario Andretti in the Lotus 78 next Hunts McLaren -Teamkollege Jochen Mass . Carlos Pace on Brabham and Tyrrell pilot Patrick Depailler formed the third row.
Niki Lauda only qualified for 13th place on the grid due to technical problems. Jody Scheckter , who won the first race of the season, had to start the race from 15th place.
run
Due to an early start that was not penalized, Pace took the lead on the first lap from Reutemann, Hunt and Mass.
Hunt, who had overtaken Reutemann shortly before, took over the top position from Pace on lap eight. During this overtaking maneuver, there was a slight contact between the two vehicles, which had no consequences for Hunt. Pace, on the other hand, had to head to the pit for repairs.
Mass had an accident in the 13th lap. In the course of this, parts of a safety fence fell on the track. Clay Regazzoni collided with it. Ronnie Peterson was also unable to evade in time, whereupon both pilots were eliminated. Meanwhile, Hunt was leading ahead of Reutemann and Andretti, who, however, retired on the 20th lap due to electrical problems. As a result, Tom Pryce took third place in front of John Watson and Jacques Laffite .
Aided by the fact that Hunt had tire problems, Reutemann took the lead on lap 23. Hunt immediately headed for the pits and had new tires fitted. He quickly made up the time he lost as a result, overtaking Lauda and Watson.
In the 31st lap, Hans Binder had an accident . He was followed by Depailler, Pace, Watson and Laffite, who each collided with the accident vehicles parked at the edge of the track. Due to an engine failure on Pryce's vehicle, Hunt finally finished second ahead of Lauda and Emerson Fittipaldi , who finished fourth for the second time in a row, which was the best result of the Copersucar-Fittipaldi team to date .
