Reports
background
In order to minimize the extreme cornering speeds that were achievable with the wing cars of previous years, the side aprons were banned. The underbody of the vehicles also had to be completely flat from now on. In addition, for safety reasons, the drivers were given a new seating position with a crumple zone of 50 centimeters in front of the pedals.
In particular, the qualifying results of teams Ferrari and Renault during the 1982 season had shown that the future in Formula 1 seemed to belong to turbo engines. Therefore, some teams tried to find suitable engine partners during the winter. Most of the 1983 season, like Williams or McLaren , however, still started with the tried and tested Ford-Cosworth engines without turbocharging . Alfa Romeo, on the other hand, immediately entered the market with the new 183T including a turbo engine. Besides the new Brabham BT52 equipped BMW now also the ATS D6 of Manfred Winkelhock made with turbo engines.
Teams Brabham , McLaren and Lotus retained their respective driver pairings from the previous year.
New team mate of reigning world champion Keke Rosberg was Jacques Laffite . Jean-Pierre Jarier then took his place at Ligier . His teammate became Raul Boesel when Eddie Cheever moved to Renault to replace René Arnoux , who had been signed by Ferrari. With the support of the new main sponsor Benetton, Tyrrell hired US debutant Danny Sullivan for the second car alongside regular driver Michele Alboreto , who won the 1982 season finale in Las Vegas .
The Fittipaldi team no longer competed. Its driver Chico Serra switched to Arrows to replace Mauro Baldi , Andrea de Cesaris's new team-mate at Alfa Romeo. RAM Racing took the place of March , which after brief engagements as a private team from 1976 to 1980 competed for the first time as a works team in Formula 1. Eliseo Salazar was hired as a driver.
Johnny Cecotto and Corrado Fabi were two other Grand Prix newbies who made their Formula 1 debut this weekend.
training
Keke Rosberg qualified for pole position ahead of Alain Prost , Patrick Tambay , Nelson Piquet , Derek Warwick , René Arnoux, Riccardo Patrese , Eddie Cheever, Niki Lauda and Mauro Baldi.
Because he ignored the request for a weight control, Andrea de Cesaris was excluded from the race. Piercarlo Ghinzani , who had returned to Formula 1 after a year break, failed to qualify in the Osella FA1D .
run
While Rosberg took the lead in front of Prost and Piquet, Baldi and Alboreto collided. However, they were able to continue the race for now. In the second lap, Piquet passed Prost.
On the seventh lap, Rosberg lost the lead to Piquet who, despite a calculated pit stop to refuel and change tires on lap 40, kept it to the finish. The Williams team had already closely observed this new strategy of the Brabham team last year and had recently brought Rosberg into the pits to refuel. There was a fire, which is why Rosberg had to leave the car for a short time. Despite the incident, he fought his way back to second place. After the race, however, he was disqualified for unauthorized pushing by his mechanics after the unsuccessful pit stop. The remaining drivers did not move up, however, so that second place was not awarded and Lauda was regularly classified as third in front of Laffite, Tambay and Marc Surer .
