The 1980 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in São Paulo on January 27 and was the second race of the 1980 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The field of participants in the Argentine Grand Prix also entered the second round of the season in Brazil in unchanged form, which took place two weeks later.

training

Jean-Pierre Jabouille qualified for pole position in the Renault RE20 from Didier Pironi , Gilles Villeneuve , Carlos Reutemann , Jacques Laffite and René Arnoux .

Alan Jones , who had won the opening race, only achieved tenth place on the grid.

The four pilots who failed to qualify were the same as two weeks earlier.

run

Villeneuve accelerated between Jabouille and Pironi at the start and took the lead. Laffite followed in third place behind Pironi and ahead of Jabouille. The latter overtook his two compatriots on the first lap and took the lead on the second lap.

Due to deteriorating tires, Villeneuve initially fell behind Elio de Angelis and Alan Jones before he had new tires fitted to the pits. Pironi also headed for the pits, leaving Jabouille in the lead ahead of Laffite and Arnoux.

In the 14th round Laffite was eliminated due to an electrical defect. This gave the two Renault drivers a one-two lead in front of Elio de Angelis, Alan Jones, Riccardo Patrese and Alain Prost .

When Jabouille retired due to a turbocharger damage, Arnoux took the lead on lap 25, defended it to the finish and thus secured his first victory.
