The 1980 Belgian Grand Prix took place on May 4th at the Circuit Zolder in Zolder-Terlaemen and was the fifth race of the 1980 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

There were five weeks between the Long Beach Grand Prix and the start of the European season in Belgium. During this hiatus, the financially troubled Shadow team had been sold to Teddy Yip, the founder of Theodore Racing team .

Alain Prost returned to the field after a break of several weeks due to injury. As a replacement for Clay Regazzoni , who had been paraplegic since his accident in Long Beach, the Ensign Racing team hired Formula 1 newcomer Tiff Needell , who made his only Grand Prix appearance.

In order to save costs, the two competing tire manufacturers Goodyear and Michelin agreed not to produce special qualifying tires from now on.

training

Alan Jones secured his second pole position of the year in dry conditions on Friday in front of the two Ligier drivers Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite . The second Williams driver Carlos Reutemann followed in fourth place in front of the two Renaults driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux .

Since no time improvements were expected on Saturdays due to the damp track conditions, some drivers decided not to take part in the second qualifying session.

run

Pironi accelerated Jones at the start and took the lead. Jabouille dropped out due to a clutch defect.

The order of the first nine drivers did not change until the 17th lap. Then Arnoux fell back to tenth place after the unsuccessful attempt to overtake Reutemann in fourth place and had to leave his fifth place to Nelson Piquet . This was eliminated in the 33rd lap due to a spin. After Laffite had lost his third place to Reutemann on lap 38, he headed for the pit because he suspected a brake defect. After his mechanics had rectified the problem, he returned to the track as 14th and thus penultimate at this point in time.

Pironi won ahead of Jones and Reutemann. Arnoux finished fourth just ahead of Jean-Pierre Jarier and Gilles Villeneuve .

Didier Pironi was the third driver after Nelson Piquet and René Arnoux in that year to win a Grand Prix for the first time.
