Reports

background

For all starters, the Belgian Grand Prix was only the second race of the 1954 Formula 1 season, as none of the drivers had participated in the Indianapolis 500. The Swiss Toulo de Graffenried only took part in this race unofficially to shoot for the film Der Favorit (original title: The Racers).

training

Juan Manuel Fangio took pole position with a time of 4: 22.1 minutes. He started ahead of José Froilán González and Giuseppe Farina .

run

After the start, Farina took the lead in the Ferrari; Fangio had got off badly. After about 500 meters the order was: Gonzáles, Farina, Hawthorn, Marimon, Pilette, Trintignant, Behra, Fangio. But at the end of the third lap, Fangio was leading by 2.5 seconds. In the first lap, four of the 14 cars that had started had already retired. Roberto Mieres had been hit most dangerous . Gasoline spilled from the tank of his car onto the exhaust pipe, ignited, and at about 130 km / h the car started to burn within sight of the start-and-finish grandstands. Mieres, whose clothes were also on fire, turned to the right and jumped out of the still moving Maserati, which rolled on without a driver before it came to a stop on an embankment. Mieres got relatively light burns on his back; he did not injure himself during the jump. From lap four, Fangio and Farina dueled until Farina had to give up the race on lap 14 with an engine failure. Fangio then led the race and drove gently when problems with the front suspension of his car arose towards the end of the race. Maurice Trintignant in the Ferrari came close to Fangio, but could not overtake him.

Fangio won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1954 ahead of Maurice Trintignant and Stirling Moss . For Trintignant and Moss it was the first podium finish each. The other points went to Hawthorn and González, who shared the car, and André Pilette in the Gordini . Moss and Pilette took their first world championship points in this race, but it remained the only point placement for Pilette.

Only Ferrari , Maserati and Gordini cars competed in this race .
