Sergio Mantovani (born May 22, 1929 in Cusano Milanino , † February 23, 2001 in Milan ) was an Italian racing driver .
Career
Mantovani was a businessman before he started racing as a hobby. He started in a Maserati in 1953 at the Targa Florio together with Juan Manuel Fangio and came third. Maserati signed him as a works driver for the 1954 World Cup . The reward for his commitment was the fifth place at the Grands Prix of Germany and Switzerland .
During training for the Gran Premio del Valentino in Turin in March 1955 , which was not part of the World Cup , Mantovani suffered a serious accident, as a result of which his left foot had to be amputated . Mantovani tried to return to motorsport with a prosthesis , but soon realized the futility of his attempts and withdrew from motorsport at the age of 26.
Afterwards Mantovani was a senior member of the Italian motorsport authority for many years. He died in 2001 at the age of 71.
