The 1953 Dutch Grand Prix took place on June 7th at the Zandvoort circuit and was the third of nine races in the 1953 World Cup .

background

In the four months that lay between the Argentine and the Dutch Grand Prix, some took place not belonging to the World Cup runs, which hinted that Maserati to Ferrari is a nearly equal opponent. Ferrari registered the four regular drivers Ascari , Farina , Villoresi and Hawthorn for the race . Louis Rosier drove a private Ferrari . The new A6SSG vehicles were available to the four Maserati factory pilots . With 190 hp, these now performed just as much as the Ferrari. Their greatest advantage, however, was the large tank, which now allowed them to cover a race distance without refueling. Concerned by numerous technical defects that led to accidents, Manzon decided to leave the Gordini team . The team therefore only competed with Trintignant , Schell and the newcomer Roberto Mieres . The Connaught team that sent Moss , McAlpine and Salvadori into the race was there again.

training

The Zandvoort circuit was freshly paved just a week before the race. There were still a lot of pebbles on the track, which, whirled up, severely hindered the drivers during training. Many therefore used barred windshields. The training turned into the expected duel between the Ferrari and Maserati drivers from which Ascari emerged victorious with a lead of 1.6 seconds over Fangio . Farina completed the first row, González and Villoresi were in the second.

run

Ascari got the best start and he kept pulling away from the field. An eventful race developed behind it. Villoresi was second ahead of Farina and Fangio, who couldn't make up any ground on the two Ferraris. González got off to a bad start and was 14th at the end of the first lap, but gradually regained positions. At the end of the seventh lap he drove back to 6th place and caught up with Hawthorn, was even able to overtake him for a short time, but on the 23rd lap his rear axle broke directly behind the pits. Then teammate Bonetto was called to the pits and handed over his car. From ninth place, he started another race to catch up, which brought him up to third place. He had caught up a full lap over Hawthorn, who came in fourth. Fangio and Villoresi were eliminated in the course of the race, while Ascari drove towards an undisputed victory.
