Reports
background
Williams presented itself with three victories in a row at the past Grand Prix in Great Britain , Germany and Austria as the dominant team of the second half of the 1979 season. Due to the rule valid at that time that the four best results from each of the two halves of the season were counted, they played Williams drivers Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni still only played a minor role in the fight for the world title, as they had only scored a few points in the first half. Ferrari -Pilot Jody Scheckter thus had the best chance of winning the drivers' championship, which was also favored by the fact that his team-mate Gilles Villeneuve a clear number-two status had on the team.
After recovering from illness, Jean-Pierre Jarier returned to his regular place in the Tyrrell team. There were no other changes in the field of drivers compared to the previous race.
The eastern section of the Zandvoort route had since been modified with a temporary chicane.
training
Renault driver René Arnoux secured pole position alongside Alan Jones and his team-mate Clay Regazzoni and his own team-mate Jean-Pierre Jabouille . The two Ferrari drivers Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve followed in front of Jacques Laffite in the Ligier .
run
While Jones took the lead right at the start, Arnoux collided with Regazzoni on his right, as he was being harassed from the left by Jabouille and Villeneuve. Regazzoni's left front wheel tore off and Arnoux damaged his suspension. Villeneuve turned into the first corner in second place.
While Scheckter, who had to start from the end of the field due to technical problems, caught up across the field, his team-mate Villeneuve took the lead from Jones on lap 11. Jabouille followed in third place ahead of Didier Pironi and Keke Rosberg . The latter two exchanged places during the next round.
By the 26th lap, Scheckter overtook both Pironi and Rosberg and at the same time benefited from Jabouille's technical failure, which earned him third place.
On lap 47, Villeneuve spun, bringing Jones back to the top. When Villeneuve's left rear tire burst four laps later, the Canadian spun again and then tried to get to the pits on three wheels. Since he had to cover an entire lap and hardly reduced his speed, his suspension was so damaged that he had to give up the race in the pits.
Jones won his third race in a row ahead of Scheckter and Laffite, who benefited from Pironi's elimination on lap 52. The other point winners were Nelson Piquet , Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass .
