The 1965 Dutch Grand Prix took place on July 18, 1965 at Circuit Park Zandvoort near Zandvoort and was the sixth race of the 1965 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
One week after the British Grand Prix, the Dutch Grand Prix took place. The teams made no changes to the cars in this short period of time and the field of drivers also remained largely unchanged. Honda did not use a second car and only reported a Honda RA272 for Richie Ginther . At Brabham , Jack Brabham stopped again and left his car to Denis Hulme . In addition, the Scuderia Centro Sud and Ian Raby Racing paused for another race.
In the run-up to the race, the Lotus team boss Colin Chapman got into a fight with police officers after he was denied access to the pit lane. Chapman did not have the correct ID and was stopped by the police. After he had illegally crossed the track, this led to the arrest after the race, during which there were again beatings. Chapman's wife was also slightly injured in the face. Chapman was imprisoned for one night but acquitted in a later trial.
With Joakim Bonnier , Graham Hill and Clark, three former winners took part in the race. Among the designers, Ferrari had previously won four times, Lotus and BRM twice each and Cooper once. After three wins in a row and four wins in the season, Clark was clearly leading in the drivers' standings from the two BRM drivers Hill and Jackie Stewart . Lotus was in first place among the designers, five points ahead of BRM. Third was Ferrari, who were already 16 points behind Lotus.
training
The first training session on Friday started in cool, overcast weather conditions, but it remained dry. New asphalt was applied in the pit lane before the start of training, which delayed it by half an hour. Ginther set the first best times before Clark went out on the track and undercut him. Gurney, Hill and Stewart were in the following ranks. Ireland had an accident and got stuck with his vehicle in one of the sand dunes that served as a barrier. His vehicle was pulled out and he continued training. Then the organizers of the Grand Prix wanted to disqualify him, but made a mistake with the number and Bob Anderson was disqualified for this training session. The second training session took place on Friday afternoon. The onset of rain prevented the fastest lap times from improving. Hill was the fastest, but 20 seconds slower than in the morning.
Weather conditions improved on Saturday when the sun was shining and it was getting warmer. The inadequate organization of the marshals and the race management was shown again in a framework race when, after an accident, the drivers within a section of the route were shown both the white, yellow, yellow-red for oil and the red flag. However, since the marshals were poorly visible, they had to step up to the edge of the track in order to be noticed by the drivers. The Formula Vee car race was then canceled, although no one was injured and the vehicles affected by the accident did not pose a threat. In training for the Automobile World Championship, Hill improved his time and was the new first. Clark, on the other hand, could not improve as his Lotus lost oil and engine problems occurred.
Hill reached his third pole position of the season, drawing level with Clark, who also started the race three times from first place on the grid. Clark finished second in training ahead of Ginther and John Surtees . All three drivers drove the same lap time. Dan Gurney started the race from fifth place, so five different designers were in the first five places. Behind Gurney, Stewart qualified in sixth ahead of Hulme, Mike Spence , Bruce McLaren and Joseph Siffert , who was the best driver with a customer vehicle. Bandini qualified twelfth after technical difficulties with his car in the back field.
run
Ginther won the start and took the lead ahead of Hill and Clark. Behind were Gurney, Stewart and Spence. Ginther last led a race two years earlier at the 1963 German Grand Prix . It was the first mileage in the lead for Honda. However, Ginther failed to break away from the competition and lost the lead on the third lap of the race to Hill. Then it was overtaken by Clark two laps later. Then he lost more positions and fell back into midfield. At the front, Hill was overtaken by Clark, who then got a head start on the competition. On the eleventh lap, Bob Anderson retired with engine failure and five laps later Bonnier retired with the same problem.
Clark increased his lead to 1.5 seconds over Hill, who was attacked by Gurney. This duel also brought Stewart closer to his teammate Hill. Behind them, Hulme passed both Spence and Surtees. A few laps later he passed Ginther and was a new fifth. After a spin, Ginther fell back to seventh behind Surtees. While Clark was leading the race in a controlled manner, a three-way battle for second place developed behind him. Gurney overtook Hill and defended himself against his two rivals for several laps before Stewart moved up to second. He was 6.5 seconds behind Clark at the time, but Stewart only narrowed that distance for a short time before Clark increased the pace again. In the midfield, Ireland and Spence spun off the track, but continued the race. McLaren retired on lap 37 with a defective differential, his team-mate Rindt followed eleven laps later and also parked his car. Thus Cooper remained without points for another race.
In the second half of the race the gaps between the drivers who were in the points increased so that there were no more duels at the top. Only Hulme made a pit stop due to an engine defect, but did not lose any position. Towards the end of the race, Ginther overtook Surtees in the battle for sixth place and on the last lap Bandini fell behind Spence after his transmission got stuck in second gear and he could no longer shift gears.
Clark won the Grand Prix by eight seconds and extended his winning streak to four races in a row. With his fifth win in the fifth race in which he took part in the 1965 Automobile World Championship, Clark further extended his lead in the drivers 'standings and only needed one more victory to become world champion early and secure the constructors' championship for Lotus. With Hill, Stewart and Surtees, only three other drivers had the theoretical chance to become world champions. For the designers, besides Lotus, it was also BRM and Ferrari. Stewart came close to Hill, who finished fourth in the race, with just one point in the drivers' standings with his second place. Gurney crossed the finish line in third and scored the first podium finish for Brabham of the season. For him, this was the prelude to another four podium finishes in the four remaining races of the season. Further points went to Hulme in fifth and Ginther in sixth. Surtees finished seventh ahead of Spence and Bandini, Ireland completed the top ten.
