Reports
background
After the serious accident at the Monaco Grand Prix , Cliff Allison was out for the rest of the season, so Ferrari only named three cars for the race. Phil Hill and Richie Ginther drove the Ferrari Dino 246F1 ; Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips also had the rear-engined version, the Dino 246P , which was not used. The Lotus team also used three cars, alongside the regular drivers Innes Ireland and Alan Stacey , Jim Clark was given a cockpit. Clark made his debut in the automobile world championship and then became one of the most successful drivers of the 1960s with the world championship win in 1963 and 1965 and various records.
Cooper and BRM did not change their driver pairings, Scarab also drove with the previous line-up, Lance Reventlow and Chuck Daigh . Aston Martin contested the first of two races of the season and fielded an Aston Martin DBR4 for Roy Salvadori . Other teams reported private Cooper T51 and Lotus 18 . Stirling Moss started in a Lotus for the Rob Walker Racing Team , the Yeoman Credit Racing Team fielded three Cooper for Chris Bristow , Tony Brooks and Henry Taylor . For Taylor it was the first race of the season. In addition, Scuderia Centro Sud had two Cooper for Maurice Trintignant and Masten Gregory in action, Carel Godin de Beaufort drove his own Cooper for Ecurie Maarsbergen , his only race of the season.
Bruce McLaren was in the lead in the drivers' standings from Stirling Moss and Jim Rathmann . Rathmann was winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1960 , but did not participate in any other races of the 1960 World Cup. McLaren's teammate and reigning world champion Jack Brabham had not yet scored any points in the first three races of the season. In the constructors' championship, Cooper was ahead of Ferrari, Lotus and BRM. With Moss and Joakim Bonnier , two former winners of the race took part. Ferrari had previously been successful twice, BRM once.
training
Moss drove the fastest time in training and thus achieved for the sixth time in a row the pole position in the world championship races to which he competed. If Moss was superior to the competition in the previous training duels, the gap to second-placed Brabham was only two tenths of a second this time. Ireland qualified in third place ahead of the three BRMs of Jo Bonnier , Graham Hill and Dan Gurney . Behind them, the midfield was split between Cooper and Lotus, Bristow was seventh ahead of Stacey, McLaren and Brooks. Clark qualified eleventh on his debut. Ferrari, the only front-engined cars in the starting field, occupied places in the back field, a clear sign of the end of the era of front-engined cars. Ginther was three seconds slower than pole time. Taylor, Trintignant and Beaufort also qualified for the race.
Several teams and drivers decided not to participate in the race after training because there were disputes with the organizer about the prize money. The entire Scarab team, Aston Martin and Gregory were affected.
run
Brabham won the starting duel against Moss and led the race from the first lap of the race. Ireland and Stacey positioned themselves behind Moss so that Brabham had three Lotus cars behind them. On the second lap of the race, Stacey overtook his teammate Ireland, who countered a short time later. Behind, McLaren passed Phil Hill. Due to the duels in the chasing field, the front of the field pulled apart, so that Brabham built up a lead over Moss, who in turn was a few seconds away from the opponents behind him. Brooks retired on lap four with a gearbox failure. McLaren parked his car on lap eight after damage to the transmission. Bristow, Brooks team-mate, retired a lap later with engine failure.
The race was then overshadowed by a serious accident involving Dan Gurney . After Gurney improved to fifth place, the brakes of his BRM failed before a hairpin turn. Gurney spun off the track and rolled over. He collided with a spectator who was in a cordoned off area. The viewer died of his serious injuries, Gurney survived the accident unharmed. The first fatal accident in the 1960 World Automobile Championship was the start of a series of serious accidents that continued in the next race, the Belgian Grand Prix, with the fatal accidents of Stacey and Bristow.
Clark gained several positions through failures and overtaking maneuvers and improved to fifth behind his team-mates Ireland and Stacey. Before that, Brabham damaged a curb on lap 17, parts of which caused a tire damage in the following Moss. Moss had his car repaired in the pits and then continued the race. So the three Lotus drivers Ireland, Stacey and Clark improved their positions until Graham Hill caught up with the group and overtook Clark.
Another series of failures began on lap 39, when Trintignant retired with transmission problems. Clark parked his car a few laps later with no power transmission. As a result, there were two engine failures on lap 54, which ended Phil Hill's and Bonnier's races. Stacey was the last to drop out. He had the same technical defect as his teammate Clark.
Brabham won with a 24-second lead over Ireland and led every race lap. This was Brabham's first win of the season after failing to finish in previous races. At the same time it was the only victory for Cooper on this circuit, for Brabham the first of two. There were four different winners in the first four races of the season. Ireland took its first podium, as did Graham Hill, who finished third. Moss overtook several opponents before the end of the race and was fourth just behind Graham Hill. The Ferrari drivers Graf Berghe von Trips and Ginther achieved the remaining positions in the points with fifth and sixth, both were one lap behind. In addition, Taylor and de Beaufort each reached the finish in seventh and eighth positions, each several laps behind. The fastest race lap was driven by Moss. In the drivers' championship, Moss came within three points of the leading McLaren. Brabham improved to fourth place with his first points of the season, Ireland improved to fifth. In the constructors' championship, Cooper extended his lead over the competition to seven points, Lotus overtook Ferrari and was second.
