Count Lawrence "Lance" von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow (born February 24, 1936 in Paddington , United Kingdom ; † July 24, 1972 in the Rocky Mountains , United States ), was the great-grandson of Winfield Woolworth , the founder of the US American department store chain Woolworth and the only child of Barbara Hutton , the only heiress of the Woolworth estate, from her second marriage to the Danish Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow. For this reason, he had both Danish and US citizenship. In the automobile world championship he drove under an American license.

Life

youth

Lance Reventlow as a young child with skis (1938)

He was kidnapped as a young child and his parents raised him at Winfield House in Regent's Park , London , where he was hidden from the public until their divorce in 1941 . The parents' marriage was considered unhappy and they divorced. Because of this, Lance had almost no connection with his father.

Cary Grant and James Dean

In their third marriage, his mother married the successful American film actor Cary Grant in 1942 . A close relationship developed between Grant and Lance Reventlow, which survived Grant's divorce from his mother in 1945. He met many Hollywood greats through Grant and was close friends with James Dean , among others , as they both shared the passion of racing. When Dean had a fatal accident in 1955, Reventlow was in his Mercedes 300 SL in the mountains of California on the way to Salinas for dinner, which they had agreed to meet.

Motorsport

In the late 1950s he bought a Maserati 200S and a Cooper racing car in Great Britain, drove in Formula 2 for a year and then founded his own team ( Scarab ). Since he was relying on the front engine at that time , which was just about to be displaced by the mid-engine, his team had no chance. His ambition went so far that he even wanted to mass-produce his own racing vehicles. He himself only competed once as a racing driver in the 1960 automobile world championship at the Grand Prix of Great Britain , but had to end the race prematurely due to an engine failure. He then lost interest in motorsport and withdrew into private life. There he continued to lead the life of a “ playboy ” of the jet set .

Private life

From 1959 to 1963 he was married to actress Jill St. John . In 1964 he married Cheryl Holdridge , with whom he was married until his accidental death. His hobbies were skiing, hiking, car racing and flying. For this reason he lived most of the time in Aspen , where he wanted to set up a ski center in the early 1970s to attract wealthy guests to the town. In doing so, he anticipated the idea that later led to the expansion of Aspens as a luxury ski resort in the USA.

death

He died in a storm in a Cessna 206 aircraft crash in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado . On this flight a relatively inexperienced 27-year-old student pilot flew and Reventlow was only a passenger, although as a sports pilot he had thousands of hours of flying experience on a wide variety of machines, including airliners. The pilot flew into a hard-to-see canyon and crashed the machine while trying to turn out of the canyon.

The organization of his funeral was coordinated by Cary Grant, as Barbara Hutton had suffered a nervous breakdown after the news of her death and was suffering from depression, which had arisen from her years of alcoholism and drug abuse and was exacerbated by the death of her son.
