The 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix took place on August 14, 1960 at the Circuito da Boavista near Porto and was the eighth race of the 1960 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
After a year break, the Portuguese Grand Prix took place for the second time on the Circuito da Boavista street circuit. The route led through canyons and sometimes the drivers drove over cobblestones or tram rails. It was the last Portuguese Grand Prix for several years. It was not until the Formula 1 World Championship in 1984 that the race took place again, at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist .
In the drivers' championship, Jack Brabham led five points over Bruce McLaren , his team-mate at Cooper . Lotus entered three cars for the race with Jim Clark , Innes Ireland and John Surtees . BRM also drove three cars for Jo Bonnier , Graham Hill and Dan Gurney . Ferrari was represented with two cars, driven by Phil Hill and Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips . The rest of the field consisted of teams with private cars. Tony Brooks , Olivier Gendebien and Henry Taylor started for the Yeoman Credit Racing Team . The Scuderia Centro Sud provided two Cooper T51s for masts Gregory and Mário de Araújo Cabral . For Gregory it was the last race of the season, for Cabral the only one. In addition, Stirling Moss , who came fourth in the drivers' championship, returned to the automobile world championship after an injury break of several months. The Rob Walker Racing Team reported both a Cooper T51 and a Lotus 18 for Moss, who only used the Lotus in training and racing. Overall, the starting field with 16 registered cars was significantly smaller than in the previous races. In addition, there was a high failure rate, so that only a few cars reached the destination.
The driver standings were still open. All drivers who had at least seven points before the race could theoretically win the drivers' title. These drivers were Brabham, McLaren, Moss, Ireland, Gendebien, Jim Rathmann and Phil Hill. Cooper won the constructors' championship at the 1960 British Grand Prix , the race before. Both Ferrari and Lotus still had the chance to finish second in this class.
With Moss, a former winner of the race took part, Cooper was previously successful once.
training
After Brabham had won the last three pole positions , the competition caught up with Cooper at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Both Lotus and BRM were competitive enough to take pole position. The duel for first place on the grid took place between Surtees on Lotus and Gurney on BRM. Surtees was only seven hundredths of a second faster and thus secured the first pole position of his career. For Lotus it was the third pole position of the season. Gurney's second place on the grid was his best training result to date. Brabham qualified third. Moss finished fourth ahead of Graham Hill and McLaren. Two other drivers from the Lotus works team followed in seventh and eighth; Ferrari started from the midfield from positions nine and ten.
Taylor had an accident in training, injured his arm and was unable to take part in the race. Clark also had an accident in which the front end of his Lotus 18 was damaged. The team repaired the car until the race and Clark drove in a vehicle that had part of the front end of it taped in place.
run
Brabham won the starting duel, but Gurney took the lead on the first lap of the race. On the second lap of the race, Brabham came too far in a corner and lost several positions. Moss improved to second place and dueled Surtees and Phil Hill in the following rounds. Again the unreliability of the BRM P48 ended the race prematurely for its drivers. Bonnier already had an engine failure on lap six, team mate Graham Hill retired just three laps later with a defective gearbox. Gurney's only remaining BRM also had an engine problem. After ten laps, which he led the race, he initially fell back with an oil leak and later retired entirely.
With Surtees overtaking Moss and Gurney falling behind, Surtees was the new leader. For Surtees this was the first mileage in the automobile world championship. Moss stayed close behind Surtees for a while, but had to pit for a repair. As a result, Brabham was back in second place and fought with Phil Hill for this position.
The rest of the race was mainly characterized by failures, which strongly influenced the race result. Gregory retired with a gearbox failure on lap 21, Phil Hill had an accident on lap 30. Surtees held the lead until he had a leak in his fuel tank on lap 37. The fuel flowed into the footwell of his car and made the pedals slippery. This led to a brake that caused Surtees to drive over a curb and damage the radiator. Surtees parked his car and Brabham took the lead.
After de Cabral also retired, only eight cars remained in the race. While Brabham dominated, Moss tried to improve some positions. In doing so, however, he braked himself and drove into a bale of straw in the lane. Moss got out of his Lotus, pushed the car in the opposite direction, and jumped into the car to continue the race. Moss was subsequently disqualified for this, as pushing the car against the direction of travel was not allowed according to the regulations at the time.
Due to the failure of the competition, Cooper dominated the race again. Brabham won by 57 seconds over his teammate McLaren. For Brabham it was the fifth win in a row, for Cooper the sixth win of the season. With this, Cooper achieved the maximum possible number of points of 48 in the constructors' rating due to the cancellation rules. Brabham extended his lead over McLaren to seven points. Third place in the race was Clark, who achieved the first podium of his career. Graf Berghe von Trips in a Ferrari was fourth, ahead of Brooks and Ireland. The last driver to cross the finish line was Gendebien in seventh place. In the duel for second place in the constructors' championship between Lotus and Ferrari, Lotus extended its lead to eleven points thanks to Clark's third place. The team needed at least one more third place in the two remaining races to secure that position. Surtees drove the fastest race lap, the first of his career in the automobile world championship.
The next race was the 1960 Italian Grand Prix , which the top British teams largely boycotted. Brabham thus defended his world title early in the break between the Portuguese Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix.
