Royal Richard "Jim" Rathmann (born July 16, 1928 in Valparaiso , Indiana , † November 23, 2011 in Melbourne , Florida ) was an American racing driver .
Life
In order to be able to compete in car races before his 21st birthday, which was forbidden at the time, Richard Rathmann presented the birth certificate of his older brother James Rathmann . When his brother later also became a racing driver, he entered under the name Dick Rathmann . The brothers are known to this day under these - actually mixed up - names.
Jim, the more successful of the two, began his career in touring car racing before competing in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 1949 and becoming one of the most successful champ car drivers of the 1950s. He competed 14 times in Indianapolis and contested numerous other races in the Champ Car series. He finished second three times in the Indianapolis 500 ( 1952 , 1957 and 1959) and was considered an all-time second before he was able to crown his career with a success in this race in 1960. Since the Indy 500 was part of the Formula 1 World Championship at that time, his name also appears in the winners' lists of this motorsport class.
Outside America, Jim Rathmann was seen only once, at the " Race of the Two Worlds " in Monza in 1958, a comparison race between the American Champ Cars and the European Formula 1 cars. Rathmann won this race.
In 1956 Rathmann took part in the first offshore race from Miami to Nassau . However, he broke his leg a few minutes after the start and never competed in boat races again.
After the Indy 500 in 1963, which he finished ninth, he retired from racing and opened a Cadillac and Chevrolet auto store in Florida , which he operated until his death.
