The 42nd Targa Florio , also 42 ° Targa Florio, Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie, Sicilia , took place in Sicily on May 11, 1958 and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

The long-distance race on public roads in Sicily was the third world championship race of the 1958 sports car world championship . The first two events, the Buenos Aires 1000 km race and the Sebring 12 hour race, ended with successes for the Ferrari factory team by Phil Hill and Peter Collins . After Hill and Collins were victorious in the last race of the World Sports Car Championship in 1957 , the 1000 km race in Caracas , the two won three races in a row for the Scuderia.

The 1958 race was the last Targa Florio to be under the patronage of Vincenzo Florio . The founder and namesake of the event, born in 1883, died in January 1959 at the age of 78 in Épernay, France .

The race

As in the previous races, Scuderia Ferrari was most strongly represented with vehicles. Four Ferrari 250TR58 were driven by Hill, Collins, Luigi Musso , Olivier Gendebien , Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips , Mike Hawthorn , Gino Munaron and Wolfgang Seidel . Another Ferrari, a 500TR , was reported by Palermo-born nobleman Prince Gaetano Starrabba di Giardinelli , who shared the controls of the car with Franco Cortese .

The greatest opposition arose from the Italian racing team from Porsche . The Porsche 718 were inferior to the 3-liter Testa Rossa Ferrari with their 1.5-liter engines, but lighter and more agile than the Ferrari. Aston Martin race director John Wyer reported an Aston Martin DBR1 / 300 driven by Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks .

The racing event was overshadowed by a fatal accident. The Ferrari 250 GT of the Piedmontese  Sergio Der Stepanian collided during a training drive with a truck loaded with sand. The Stepanian was injured so badly that he died a short time later in a hospital.

At the beginning of the race, Stirling Moss was in the lead, but he lost the track and damaged his radiator so severely that he had to give up. After the withdrawal of the Aston Martin, a tough battle developed between the factory Ferrari and the factory Porsche, which Luigi Musso and Olivier Gendebien ultimately decided for Ferrari. At the finish they had a lead of almost five minutes over the Porsche of Jean Behra and Giorgio Scarlatti .
