history
Finds from the Neolithic Age , from the 3rd century BC. BC and again finds from the Gallic - Roman period up to the first mention of a religious community in the 6th century, founded in 572 by Aredius of Limoges , document a long uninterrupted history of settlement in the area around Vigeois. At that time, however, the name was still Vosia , until the 16th century the name changed to Vigeas , only to take its current form later. Of course , like all the others, this abbey suffered from medieval incidents such as looting, raids and pillage by the local rulers. Nevertheless , an internal organization had existed since 1082 with the help of the Abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges , which also included several branches of the abbey in other places and a library from the 12th century. Geoffroy du Breuil , also known as Geoffroy de Vigeois , prior of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre von Vigeois, played a major role in this . There he wrote a chronicle of the medieval Limousin and the first crusades . During the Hundred Years' War and the Huguenot Wars , the monastery was plundered and pillaged several times. In the 17th century, monastic life in Vigeois slackened and the abbey joined the Benedictines . The monastery buildings disappeared after the French Revolution , only the abbey church remained. With the construction of the Paris - Toulouse railway line between 1882 and 1892, Vigeois developed significantly (in 1886 the place had over 4,000 inhabitants), and a new economic center for the region was created in the area of the train station.
