The Miami New Times is a free regional American weekly newspaper based in Miami , Florida . It is distributed every Thursday. It is based in the Wynwood Art District of Miami and is aimed at residents of the Miami-Dade County area . It is one of the most famous of the publications known as alternative weeklies .

Overview

The newspaper was bought by Village Voice Media , then known as New Times Media , in 1987 when it was a bi-weekly publication called Wave . It has been edited since 2010 by Chuck Strouse, a former reporter for the Miami Herald . The newspaper won several awards, including the 2007 Investigative Reporters and Editors weekly first prize for a report on the Julia Tuttle Causeway, a sex offender facility. In 2010 the newspaper received international attention when it published an investigative report by Brandon K. Thorp and Penn Bullock by the anti-gay activistGeorge Alan Rekers acted, who hired a male prostitute to travel around Europe.

In September 2012, Village Voice Media employees Scott Tobias, Christine Brennan and Jeff Mars bought shares in the newspaper from the founders and formed the Voice Media Group .

Previous writers for the Miami New Times were Steve Almond , Pete Collins , Jim DeFede , Robert Andrew Powell , Sean Rowe, and Kirk Semple .
