Career
Corbett came to the United States as immigrants with his parents as a toddler . There they lived first in Pittsburgh and later moved to Fresno , California . In 1919 he started boxing as "Ralph Giordano" (later he changed his name to "Young Corbett III").
Robust southpaw Corbett has fought many legendary fights. For example, he played a series of four fights against eventual welterweight world champion Jack Thompson , of which he won three and one ended in a draw. He also recorded victories against Sergeant Sammy Baker , Mickey Walker , Billy Conn , Fred Apostoli , the welterweight world champion Jackie Fields and the later middleweight world champion Ceferino Garcia .
On February 22, 1933 , Corbett won the welterweight world title in a 10 round fight against Jackie Fields. He won 6 rounds, Fields only 3 out of 10 rounds. Three months later he was dethroned by Jimmy McLarnin with a knockout in the first round.
Then Corbett rose to middleweight division. During this time he beat the later heavyweight world champion Gus Lesnevich (TKO 5th) as well as Mickey Walker and Billy Conn. On February 22, 1938 he beat Fred Apostoli and won the world title in this weight class. On November 18 of the same year, he met Apostoli again, but this time was stopped in the eighth round. By the time Corbett retired in 1940, he had contested 156 fights, of which he won 122 (32 knockout) and lost 12.
Others
In addition to his boxing career, Corbett worked as a physical education teacher for the California Highway Patrol and as a gravedigger. In Fresno a statue of Corbett was erected with him in a boxing pose. He was also inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004 .
