Jimmy McLarnin (born December 19, 1907 in Hillsborough , Ireland , † October 28, 2004 in Pasco ) was a Canadian boxer of Irish origin.

McLarnin defeated Pancho Villa early in his featherweight career . In 1928 he suffered his only premature defeat against Ray Miller, but was able to defeat Miller on points in the rematch. In 1929 and 1930 he won against Sammy Mandell on points. Billy Petrolle, who had defeated him in 1930, he hit twice in 1931. He prematurely defeated the lightweight legend Benny Leonard in 1932.

In 1933 McLarnin won the welterweight world title with a first-round knockout against Young Corbett III . In October 1933 he became a US citizen. In 1934 and 1935 he played a series of three fights against Barney Ross . He lost the first clash, won the second fight, but was also defeated in the third fight and thus finally lost his title.

He then lost to Tony Canzoneri , but won the rematch. After winning points over the former world lightweight champion Lou Ambers, he ended his career at the age of 29.

Despite his low knockout rate by today's standards, McLarnin was considered a boxer with good punch. In addition to the opponents mentioned, Ring Magazine also counts Kid Kaplan (1927, KO8), Sid Terris (1928, KO1), Joe Glick (1929, W points and KO2), Sammy Baker (1929, KO1), Ruby Goldstein (1929, KO2 ) and Al Singer (1930, KO3) among the world class boxers who went against him.

In 1991, McLarnin was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
