Steve Almond

Steve Almond (* 27. October 1966 ) is an American author of short stories and essayist . He is the author of ten books, three of which he published himself.

Life

Almond grew up in Palo Alto , California and graduated from Henry M. Gunn High School . He received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown . He worked as a newspaper reporter for seven years, mainly in El Paso and for the Miami New Times . He now lives in Arlington , Massachusetts with his wife and two children .

Literary work

Almond second book, Candy Freak (2005), was on the New York Times bestseller list, won the Alex Award of the American Library Association and was Book of the Year 2005, the booksellers association BookSense . His books have been published in half a dozen countries and translated into German, Dutch, Spanish, and Croatian. He has published more than 150 stories in magazines such as Tin House , Playboy , Zoetrope, and Plowshares . His story "Donkey Greedy, Donkey Gets Punched" was voted one of the Best American Short Stories 2010 and Spilt Milk Entertainment has secured the film rights. Two of his stories were awarded the Pushcart Prize . His essays and journalistic work have appeared in The New York Times Magazine , GQ , The Wall Street Journal , Poets & Writers, and Real Simple . His short stories and essays have been published in numerous anthologies . Almond also rates books in reviews for the New York Times , Boston Globe, and Los Angeles Times . He teaches regularly at Grub Street in Boston , the Sanibel Writer's Conference and the Tin House Writer's Conference , among others .

Political work

Almond was an associate professor of creative writing at Boston College for five years until he resigned on May 12, 2006 in an open letter published in the Boston Globe . In the letter, he made it clear that his protest was against the election of Condoleezza Rice as the guest speaker at the 2006 opening. In a later appearance on the Hannity & Colmes show on Fox News , he discussed his decision with others. Almond is a regular contributor to the New York Times Magazine and the literary website The Rumpus , where he often writes on the connection between morality and politics. His column "The Week in Greed" is an attempt to examine the influence of greed in our political theater.

Self-published

After a decade of working with traditional publishers, Almond has self-published three books in recent years and has become an outspoken self-publishing advocate , which he wrote extensively in the Los Angeles Times , Poets & Writers, and The Rumpus .

Steve was a guest writer on the Alarm Clock Theater Company's Elliot Norton Award winning play PS Page Me Later , based on a selection from Found Magazine .

Radio & Podcast

Almond is a regular correspondent on NPR 's Here & Now and WGBH , both based in Boston. On October 27, 2011, Almond appeared as a guest on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron . Almond also hosted a live podcast interview with Hallelujah the Hills bandleader Ryan Walsh entitled "This Has Been A Disaster - Thanks For Having Us." (for example: "That was a disaster - thank you for letting us be here.")
