Elliot Norton Awards

The Elliot Norton Awards are presented annually for best performance in theaters in and around Boston , United States .

The award ceremony evolved from the Norton Medal , which was first awarded in 1983. The award bears the name of the long-time Boston theater critic Elliot Norton (1903-2003), a graduate of the Boston Latin School (graduating class 1922), who had retired as a critic in 1982 after 48 years. In addition to receiving awards for the best productions , theatrical productions , and actors and personnel, the Elliot Awards include a Lifetime Achievement Award and Norton Sustained Excellence Award .

The awards are presented annually by the Boston Theater Critics Association , which awards the award, in a ceremony moderated by a guest of honor. Guests of honor included Edward Albee , Julie Harris , Ian McKellen , Al Pacino , Jason Robards and August Wilson .
