Book of the year (Rhineland-Palatinate)
The “Book of the Year” competition was held annually from 1989 to 2011 by the Literaturwerk Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar eV (until 2008: Support Group of German Writers in Rhineland-Palatinate eV - FöK) in cooperation with the Association of German Writers (VS) in Rhineland-Palatinate and from 2003 also awarded to the VS of Saarland .
German-language fiction works whose authors were born in Rhineland-Palatinate or Saarland, live there or have lived there for a long time were eligible to participate . The last prize money was 1,500 euros. From 2001 onwards, in addition to the main prize, a “Special Jury Prize” of 500 euros was awarded.
The choice was made by an independent jury , consisting of the respective previous year's award winner and one person each from the literary and literary critical profession, the writers' associations of the two federal states and the media, art and industry department of the ver.di trade union in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The “Book of the Year” award was financed by funding from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture, and the “Special Jury Award” since 2003 by the ver.di department of media, art and industry in Rhineland-Palatinate-Saar .
In 2012 the Literaturwerk Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar announced that it would discontinue the competition until further notice due to dwindling public interest. Instead, a prize for the “Debut of the Year” is to be awarded every two years in cooperation with the Landes-VS.
