Appreciation
Christoph Peters justifies his proposal for the Wolfgang Koeppen Prize with the following words: “Since his grandiose debut novel Delhi in 1999, Marcus Braun, born in 1971 on the Moselle, has occupied a special position in German literature: in her obsession with languages, her bold cuts While largely dispensing with the certainties of traditional narrative structures, his novels and plays are committed from the outset to the experimental approaches of classical modernism, as introduced into German post-war literature by Wolfgang Koeppen with his trilogy of failure . Undeterred by fashions and zeitgeist, he revolves around the great themes of humanity: enthusiastic love and erotic obsession, borderline experience and crossing borders, the way into the foreign, death. […] In ever new constellations, Marcus Braun shows what remains of life to us late-born after the erosion of social, political and metaphysical ties. The loss of traditional certainties always resonates, but the time to mourn them is long gone. [...] But despite all the darkness, it is a tremendous pleasure to read Marcus Braun. His language in its laconically precise, yet always poetic power leads us to believe that the only salvation from the absurdity of human conditions lies in the successful sentence. […] Last but not least, with Marcus Braun you can always hear the cosmic laughter in the background. With his sense of humor, he lets us safely balance over the abyss, although there may no longer be any rope taut. "
